Beaver Valley boys high school volleyball: Which area team has been shot at making playoffs?
The WPIAL boys high school volleyball season officially kicked off Friday with regular season play.
As Beaver Valley teams begin action this week, let’s take a look at the five area teams that will be looking to claim WPIAL gold later this spring season.
Moon Area
2024 Record: 8-9, 5-5 Class 3A Section III
After losing nine seniors to graduation, Moon Area will replace some of its top players from last season.
The team loses all section players Charlie Basil and Josh Hatton but returns senior Billy Sprott and Oliver Enos, who played a key role in the team’s success.
Moon Area finished last year with a spot in the postseason and a third-place finish in its section.
BCCS
2024 Record: 1-11, 1-11 Class 2A Section II
BCCS will be in a new section this season after realignment, now facing reigning WPIAL champion Mars, Aquinas Academy, North Catholic and Shaler after a last-place finish in Section I last season.
Ambridge
2024 Record: 14-5, 11-1 Class 2A Section IV
One of the most dominant programs in the Beaver Valley, Ambridge won its section a season ago will see if it can sustain the success it found after qualifying for the PIAA playoffs as the WPIAL’s No. 3 seed.
Despite losing five seniors to graduation, Ambridge will return several upperclassmen, including all-section outside hitter Karson Merlina.
Hopewell
2024 Record: 7-11, 5-7 Class 2A Section IV
Hopewell is in search of a playoff berth after narrowly missing the postseason last year, finishing fifth in Section I.
While the team will lose some senior leadership, it will bring back junior right side hitter Jake Pollack, who took home all-section honors in 2024.
OLSH
2024 Record: 9-7, 7-5 Class 2A Section IV
OLSH looks to improve upon a third-place finish in the section last year. Longtime head coach Mike “Mac” McDonald enters his 40th season, with the past 34 years coming at OLSH.
The team brings back senior Noah Wheeler, juniors Patrick Altmar, Brady Rooney, and sophomores Isaac Tarbuk and Aidan Curry. Now it's in search of depth. The key to the season for OLSH is to steadily improve with its newer players.
