Souness: “Salah is taking a risk letting contract run down”
Salah’s Future at Liverpool Remains Uncertain
Graeme Souness has issued a stark warning to Mohamed Salah regarding his contract situation at Liverpool, making it abundantly clear that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) must take decisive action over the Egyptian forward’s future. Amid speculation over Salah’s next move, Wayne Rooney has also weighed in with a significant claim about the 32-year-old forward.
Salah’s current deal at Anfield is set to expire at the end of the season, and as things stand, no agreement has been reached on an extension. The Egyptian international, who has cemented himself as a modern-day Liverpool legend, remains an integral part of Arne Slot’s plans. The Anfield faithful are desperate for him to stay, with his performances continuing to underline his immense value to the team.
This season, Salah has once again delivered remarkable numbers, amassing 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 Premier League appearances as Liverpool push for yet another league title. However, their European campaign ended prematurely after falling to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16, with Salah struggling to make an impact across both legs.
Souness Sounds the Alarm Over Salah’s Contract Gamble
Reflecting on Salah’s underwhelming displays against PSG, Liverpool legend Souness has expressed concern over the forward’s reluctance to commit to a new deal. The former Anfield captain believes Salah is taking a significant risk by allowing his contract to run down, warning that an injury between now and the end of the season could jeopardise any lucrative offers from other clubs.
Despite his cautionary words, Souness remains adamant that FSG must act swiftly to secure Salah’s future, pointing out that Liverpool’s attacking depth is insufficient when the Egyptian is not at his best.
Writing in The Daily Mail, Souness said:
“Mo Salah had two of his quietest games for Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain but, regardless of that, the importance of getting him signed up on a new contract was still emphasised.
That may seem strange to say when he barely laid a glove on the French but my point is, when he is kept quiet, as good as Liverpool’s other strikers are, no-one else steps up and poses anything like the same telling goal threat.”
Salah’s Negotiating Power and FSG’s Dilemma
Salah’s statistical output this season speaks volumes, with 32 goals and 22 assists in all competitions before March. At 32, he remains a key figure for Liverpool, and Souness believes the forward is in an enviable negotiating position despite his age.
“Salah is having his best season, as 32 goals and 22 assists by March testify. He is in a wonderful negotiating position even at 32.”
FSG now face a critical juncture. Liverpool’s ownership group must weigh up the financial implications of offering Salah an extension against the potential cost of losing their talisman.
Souness continued:
“The guy is unique. But, if his thinking is to leave Liverpool and let his contract go down to the last day, it is very brave of him because he could end up with an injury that could put any big deal with another club in jeopardy.”
Liverpool’s Attack Hinges on Salah’s Future
Salah’s commitment and professionalism have never been in doubt. Despite speculation about his next move, he continues to perform at the highest level, proving his worth time and again. Souness believes that Liverpool’s attacking potency is significantly diminished when Salah is not firing on all cylinders, something FSG must consider as they attempt to secure his future at Anfield.
“I have to say though he has been full pedal to the floor, still breaking records and all credit to him. If he’s not at it, Liverpool don’t carry the same threat and that should be in the forefront of the thinking for decision makers at Anfield when trying to get him to sign this new contract.”
As negotiations continue, Salah remains the focal point of Liverpool’s ambitions. Whether FSG will meet his demands or risk losing one of the club’s greatest-ever players remains to be seen.
