Selection committee head explains why Notre Dame dropped to No. 3 seed
Notre Dame's hopes at being a No. 1 seed for the 2025 edition of March Madness were hanging by a thread after losing two of three to end the regular season. The Irish then lost to eventual ACC Tournament champion Duke in the semifinals, and those hopes were gone.
A No. 2 seed also proved to be out of the question when other teams aiming for high seeds fared better in their respective conference tournaments. That's why the Irish were left with a No. 3 seed according to selection committee head Derita Dawkins, who dubbed it an "interaction effect" as she was interviewed during the selection show that was broadcast on ESPN.
So it's not coincidental that No. 2 seeds went to both the Blue Devils and NC State, the team that lost in the ACC Tournament title game but also beat the Irish in double overtime to kick off the recent rough stretch:

There's nothing the Irish can do now except play the hand they've been dealt. If they can do that well, everything will be fine.
