NEW YORK — Pete Alonso heard the Mets fans' support loud and clear and delivered on their trust in his first game back at Citi Field.
After an unsettled offseason where it was unclear whether Alonso would be back in Flushing, the Mets first baseman delivered a riotous return with a home run in his first at-bat back at Citi Field.
In a 1-2 count against Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman, Alonso reached out and sent a fastball over the right-field wall for a two-run opposite field shot. As he was serenaded with chants of his name, Alonso emerged from the dugout and tipped his cap to the Mets fans.
It was Alonso's third home run of the season after he blasted a grand slam in the series opener against the Marlins last Monday and added a game-tying three-run long ball during the finale on Wednesday. He leads the Mets with 10 RBI in seven games.

Alonso's return to the Mets did not always seem like a foregone conclusion as negotiations slipped into February, but the Mets fans made sure the first baseman knew exactly how much he was loved throughout the process. And in his first game back, Alonso flashed the reason he has become a hometown favorite once again.
