Saints should explore trade with Patriots for exciting rookie QB
The New Orleans Saints pursuing a trade with the New England Patriots makes sense if you want to safeguard yourself against the possibility of missing out on a quarterback in this year's NFL draft. Patriots backup Joe Milton III has been a hot topic this offseason, and he's been linked to the Saints as a trade candidate before.
Right now the Saints quarterback room includes Derek Carr, Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and Ben DiNucci. Acquiring Milton should push Haener or DiNucci out of the equation. This hypothetical would leave you with Carr and two-high ceiling players entering their second year in the league.
Carr's contract restructure positioned him for one more, and likely final, season with the Saints. There was a contingent of fans and observers, myself included, who felt New Orleans should have given the reigns to Rattler to see what you have in your young quarterback. There's a chance that still happens, just not until 2026. Carr can lead you to another season teetering around average and push you out of range of a getting a first round quarterback. That is far from an unimaginable scenario depending on how many quarterbacks are viewed as first round prospects.
Rattler or Milton would be a good backup plan to fall back on. They give you a quarterback still on a rookie contract with the added benefit of comfortability in the system. Rattler flashed potential in his starts, but the surrounding pieces were never conducive to victory for a rookie quarterback and his rookie mistakes. Milton never started, but played extensively in the Patriots season finale. He completed 76 percent of his passes and delivered two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing.
850 ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi suggested the asking price of the Patriots could be a third-round pick. Flipping a 2024 sixth rounder, in Milton, for a third-round pick in the upcoming draft would be great value for New England.
The Saints should try to push that to a Day 3 selection to truly entertain it. The Saints have two fourth round picks, and it's in that region you begin to aim for depth players. If you think extremely highly of Milton, maybe you consider third round, but one of the Saints' fourth round picks feels like a sweet spot for the trade.
