Rogers has best finish for Berry diver since 1988
Micah Rogers made a splash — or more accurately a lack of one on his well performed dives – during his high school diving career at Logansport.
Rogers accomplished a feat that had not been accomplished in 21 years at LHS as he advanced to the regional level three straight years, matching Justin Geisler, who accomplished the feat from 2002-04.
Rogers’ 10th place finish at the Valparaiso Regional on Feb. 25 was the best finish for a Berry diver in the IHSAA Tournament since Corey Closson placed fourth at the State Finals in 1988.
Rogers’ score of 293.6 at the regional finished just 13.5 points out of eighth place and the final spot of the State Finals.
“I thought it was pretty good. It was close,” Rogers said. “The judging was pretty tight. One and two were pretty much separated, but three through eight were really close. And I think it really could have gone either way for any of us, honestly.”
Rogers said it’d be easy to find 13.5 points out of his 11 dives.
“Honestly, I could have scrapped together some easy things on all of my dives that would’ve got me to state,” he said. “So I think I just needed to hone in on the little things a little bit better.”
He was competing against a stacked deck, so to speak. Not only was most of his competition from the Region, where the judges are happen to be from and they were more accustomed to judging their more familiar divers. It’s a similar issue to what the Logansport gymnastics team deals with on an annual basis at the regional level trying to make it to the State Finals.
Another thing working against Rogers was that he was going up against a lot of specialists who receive more training throughout the year in diving.
The top two divers in the regional field, Warsaw’s Ian Parrott and Skyler Kretsch, went on to finish third and 14th the following weekend at the State Finals.
“Seeing everybody there and seeing everybody else’s skill level, it can be pretty intimidating,” Rogers said. “But you can kind of pick up the little things. You’re watching how they do their stuff and you can kind of load up off of what they’re doing.”
Rogers said competing at the regional level three straight years helped him improve.
“I definitely watched the one and two divers to what they did, to see if I could implement that into what I do to make myself better,” he said.
And as far as the non-specialist divers, Rogers was probably one of the best in the state.
“I don’t dive outside out outside of winter,” he said. “It was just kind of one of those things where I picked it up and then realized I was decent at it.”
Logansport coach Mike Shannon said Rogers was a natural at the sport.
“Micah is going to be one that we’re going to hate to lose because he was such a clutch teammate,” he said. “He was just able to improve. It was one of those things that was almost a natural thing. He jumped on the board his freshman year and it was like, ‘whoa, what was happening there?’ He just started progressing, progressing, progressing, and this is the highest that he placed in the last three years. He’s been to regionals three out of the four years of his high school career, and it’s too bad it had to end so soon.”
Rogers’ main sport and what he spends his summers doing is baseball. He’s gearing up for a senior season where he will be a key pitcher and outfielder for the Berries.
“I’m excited,” he said. “Honestly, I think we’re going to have a good team. I think our depth is really good. I think we have a chance to win sectionals this year.”
Rogers will wrap up his high school athletic career this spring before he heads to Indiana State University, where he plans to study physical therapy and athletic training.
