The Carolina Panthershaven't added any new pass catchers to their roster this offseason. And despite the, well, underwhelming state of their receiving group, don't count on them using this year's eighth overall pick on one either.
Joe Person of The Athletic joined WFNZ's Mac & Bone this past Friday, and discussed the team's notable lack of activity at the receiver position. Person, who stated that the organization appears to be "obsessed" with fixing their defense at the moment, isn't buying the possibility of the Panthers taking a wideout or a tight end in the first round.
"It doesn't feel like to me, unless I'm reading the tea leaves wrong, that they're going to use the eighth pick on a Tyler Warren or a Tet McMillan," he stated. "Now, if they were in a trade-back scenario, would they potentially look at one of those guys or one of those receivers in the early teens? Yeah. That would seem more likely to me."
Carolina has indeed gone to work on what was a historically-bad defense in 2024. The first day of the legal tampering period resulted in four deals for free-agent defenders—linemen Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown III, outside linebacker Pat Jones II and safety Tre'von Moehrig.
And there's still more work to do, perhaps off the edge. The current favorites to be selected with that eighth overall pick seem to be a pair of University of Georgia Bulldogs—linebacker Jalon Walker and pass rusher Mykel Williams.
But if the Panthers do trade down, McMillan and Warren—who are largely considered as the class' top wide receiver and tight end prospects, respectively—could be in play. Texas' Matthew Golden, Missouri's Luther Burden III and Michigan's Colston Loveland might also be worth keeping an eye on in a potential move down the board.
