On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they had signed Czech forward David Tomasek (29) to a one-year, $1.2 million deal for the 2025-26 season. Tomasek led the SHL in scoring with 57 points (24-33=57) in 47 games for Farjestad BK in 2024-25 and added two points (0-2=2) in six playoff games, as Farjestad BK was eliminated in the SHL quarterfinals by Skelleftea 4-2.

Pavel Barta, a Czech writer for iSport.cz, reported on Wednesday that the Anaheim Ducks were among the “interested parties” who inquired about Tomasek. He was a teammate of Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas and starting goaltender Lukas Dostal at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Prague, where Czechia won gold. Tomasek scored four points (1-3=4) in ten games at the tournament.

Tomasek is a 6-foot-2, 187-pound skillful center who has played in four of Europe’s top leagues (Czechia, KHL, Liiga, and SHL) and is ready to make the transition to North America to play among the highest concentration of the world’s best players in the NHL.

At Farjestad BK, he was a teammate of Ducks prospect goaltender Damian Clara (20), who was drafted two years ago by Anaheim (60th overall in 2023), and Ducks prospect defenseman Stian Solberg (19), who was drafted last year (23rd in ’24).

Clara underperformed at the SHL level in 2024-25, with a 9-10-0 record and a .879 SV% before he transferred to Karpat in the Finnish Liiga. In ten games for Karpat, he posted a 3-7-0 record and a .910 SV%.

Solberg also left Farjestad BK before their season had ended, as the Ducks recalled him to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL, citing injuries within the organization as the reason for the transfer. He had seen his ice time and usage decrease for Farjestad BK as the playoffs approached and finished with 12 points (3-9=12) in 47 games. He has three points (1-2=3) in five games since joining the Gulls.

Though Tomasek would have had familiarity with several members of the Ducks organization, the perennial cup-contending Oilers were the ones able to nab one of the more talented free agent players not currently playing in the NHL.
