Real Madrid are the first team to secure a place in this season’s Copa del Rey final, continuing their pursuit of domestic silverware.

The victory over Real Sociedad has set up what will be the club’s 41st Copa del Rey final, a landmark moment in their rich history.

With 20 wins and 20 losses in previous finals, the stage is set to determine whether Real Madrid will tilt the scales in their favour.

A look at their record in the Copa del Rey during the 21st century tells us that the team has been far from dominant.

A look at the numbers

This final marks their seventh appearance in the competition’s showpiece event since the turn of the millennium. The club has reached the final in 2002, 2004, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2023, and now 2025.

While they have triumphed over Barcelona twice and Osasuna once, they have also endured setbacks, with defeats to Deportivo, Zaragoza, and Atletico Madrid marring their recent Copa del Rey history.

This year’s final will be their fourth shot at a title this season, following the European Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup, where they were defeated.

Ancelotti chasing history

From a managerial perspective, this will be Carlo Ancelotti’s third Copa del Rey final with the club. Having already claimed two titles (in 2014 and 2023), the Italian coach is on the verge of making history.

Accoring to MARCA, Ancelotti currently shares second place in the list of coaches with the most Copa del Rey final appearances alongside Luis Molowny and Paco Bru, both of whom have managed two wins and one loss in the competition.

However, the record that Ancelotti is chasing belongs to Miguel Munoz, who led Real Madrid to four Copa del Rey finals, securing two victories and two losses.

If Ancelotti guides Real Madrid to another triumph this year, he will surpass Munoz and become the club’s most successful Copa del Rey manager, further solidifying his legacy at the Bernabeu.
