Real Madrid have their backs against the wall with two critical season-defining games ahead of them, but managing both without compromising one is challenging.
The UEFA Champions League has historically been Los Blancos’ biggest aim of the season, but they stare elimination in the eye after losing the first leg by a 3-0 margin against Arsenal.
Next week’s second leg, thus, must see them pull off an unprecedented comeback if they are to win the tie. Before that, however, they have a critical game against Deportivo Alaves.
Request denied
The Merengues’ game against Eduardo Coudet’s side is scheduled to be played on Sunday, giving Real Madrid sufficient rest after the defeat in the UCL.
As relayed by El Larguero, however, Real Madrid officially asked La Liga if their game can be preponed to Saturday.
While it would mean less rest for the league game, the new arrangement would provide Real Madrid with more time before their UCL reverse fixture and much-needed rest to the squad.
La Liga, however, refused to entertain Real Madrid’s request and the game will thus go ahead on Sunday night. Los Blancos will have to make do with just over 72 hours between the Alaves and Arsenal games.
While it may appear harsh, La Liga’s decision to rule out Real Madrid’s request is understandable considering that it would create massive inconvenience to several parties who have booked tickets for the game, especially with it now being the nth minute.
Carlo Ancelotti is expected to rest the core of his squad for the game nevertheless, and the situation may thus go unaffected should he do so.
The bigger worry for Real Madrid is getting three points while having key stars rested which is easier said than done.
