Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay knows quarterbacks. He helped turned Kirk Cousins into star, made Jared Goff a Pro Bowler and won a Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford.
So when it comes to evaluating opponents, McVay can see when a rival quarterback is good or not. And after one season of seeing Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, McVay is already a fan.
"The way he was playing the position, it sure looks sustainable," McVay told ESPN's John Keim at the annual NFL owner's meeting in March. "He has that swagger, that confidence, that enjoyment with competing ... the smile, the ability to be totally immersed in the moment. That's one of the things I loved about watching him. I don't see that changing. ... He's going to be really scary for a long time."
Daniels won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, while Rams edge rusher Jared Verse won Defensive Rookie of the Year.
The Rams never got a chance to see Daniels on the opposite side of the field in 2024. L.A. would have played Daniels in the NFC Championship if they beat the Philadelphia Eagles, but the Rams lost by six points in a blizzard.
Unfortunately, the Rams won't see Daniels and the Commanders in the regular season for at least one more season. L.A. faces the NFC South and the NFC North-winning Detroit Lions in 2025. However, the Commanders are an away opponent in 2026. There is, of course, the chance these two teams meet in the NFC playoffs depending on how the season and seeds shake out.
