With several question marks still surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers' secondary, any time a big-name defender is released, it doesn't hurt to wonder how they'd fare in the Steel City—such as the recently released former Raiders CB Jack Jones.
In Jones' case, the answer is quite simple—absolutely not. However, it appears these 'bargain' signings are what the Pittsburgh Steelers are infamously known for, like attempting to soften the blow of losing Antonio Brown by signing Donte Moncrief in 2019—and that would be frightening for the Steelers' 2025 pass defense.
Jones, primarily playing as an outside CB for Las Vegas, struggled mightily in coverage—allowing a whopping, league-leading 10 TDs in pass defense, as well as giving up a 115.8 passer rating to opposing QBs.
The Las Vegas Raiders were apparently attempting to trade Jones before eventually releasing him.
While signing Jones seems like a classic Pittsburgh Steelers budget-saver move, even as a depth piece he would be of little help, and his poor work ethic could actually hinder the defense.
Rolling with a 34-year-old veteran CB in Darius Slay and the talented, yet pass-interference-prone CB Joey Porter Jr. seems incomplete. Jones is far from an answer—or even a quality backup.
