Despite putting pen to paper on a four-year contract extension only last month, Matheus Cunha has issued a come-and-get-me plea in preparation for the summer window.

In truth, while the Brazilian departing will come as a gutting blow to Wolverhampton Wanderers, the deal he signed means they’re likely to get a substantial fee from his departure, which can instantly be used to acquire his successor.

Reports have claimed Cunha’s terms now contain a £62.5 million release clause, allowing the West Midlands outfit to at least be granted some compensation in the form of a vital cash injection. Given that his previous contract was poised to expire in 2027, his suitors had already begun mulling over how they could test Wolves’ resolve with cut-price bids.

The 25-year-old, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2022, has notched 13 goals and four assists in 26 Premier League appearances this term. He has proven to be one of the most influential figures in the top flight – so much so that you’d question whether Wolves would’ve been able to escape the drop had he not been in the fold; they sit 17th-placed but nine points clear of Ipswich Town in 18th.

Now, amid interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, Cunha has made clear his desire to embark on a new venture – one that will ensure he’s in the mix for the top accolades.

“I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step,” he told The Guardian. “I want to fight for titles.”

His honest admission comes just three months after manager Vitor Pereira poured praise on the Molineux talisman following a 2-0 win over United, during which Cunha scored and assisted.

“He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details,” Pereira said, as cited by the Premier League.
