Preview: Can UND slow down Alex Bump?
Mar. 21—ST. PAUL — The first time UND and Western Michigan played this season, UND led 2-1 in the third period.
Alex Bump scored the game-tying goal, then the game-winner in overtime. He had 10 shots on goal that night.
The second time the Fighting Hawks and Broncos played this season, Bump had two goals, three points and eight shots on goal in a 5-1 Western Michigan win.
The third time UND and Western Michigan played this season, Bump scored a goal, tallied two points and registered eight shots on goal as the Broncos secured the Penrose Cup with a 6-4 win.
And the fourth time, UND finally kept Bump quiet. He had no points, four shots on goal and a minus-1 rating. UND won that game.
One of the keys to Friday night's National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff game will be to slow down Bump.
Of course, that's easier said than done.
Bump, the NCHC's Forward of the Year, had three goals and five points in last weekend's sweep of St. Cloud State in the NCHC quarterfinals.
The former Prior Lake star has attempted 338 shots this season and average of 9.39 per game. He's registered 202 on goal, most in the nation.

Bump is returning to the Xcel Energy Center, where he made a name for himself with a five-goal game in the Minnesota state tournament with Prior Lake.
The UND senior grew up attending old WCHA Final Fives in Xcel Energy Center, watching UND play and win championships. Now, it's his turn. As a senior, his college career is winding down and this is an opportunity for him to make an impact.
Western Michigan ranks in the top 10 nationally in virtually every major statistical category. The Broncos are 17-3 in the last 20 games. Two of those three losses came in overtime. The only regulation loss was at Arizona State. Half of Western Michigan's team had the flu that day. They're a juggernaut this season.
