E.J. Emery on track to play in NCHC Frozen Faceoff
Mar. 18—ST. PAUL, Minn. — UND is expecting freshman defenseman E.J. Emery to play this weekend in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff.
Emery, a first-round pick of the New York Rangers, has missed the last three weekend series with a lower-body injury he sustained on Feb. 22 against Minnesota Duluth.
Emery skated last week ahead of UND's series against Omaha but did not play.
UND coach Brad Berry thinks he will be in the lineup at 7:30 p.m. Friday, though, when the Fighting Hawks take on Penrose Cup-champion Western Michigan in the NCHC semifinals in Xcel Energy Center.
"He's going to be playing this weekend," Berry said. "We had a practice today. It was a heavy practice with a lot of movement, a lot of compete drills, a lot of execution drills. He sustained the whole practice, went right through it, came out the other side looking good."
UND will practice Wednesday in Grand Forks before traveling to St. Paul.
The Fighting Hawks (21-14-2) will skate at 2 p.m. Thursday in Xcel Energy Center. That practice is open to the public.
"We've got another practice tomorrow before we get on the bus down to St. Paul, but it looks good for him to be in the lineup," Berry said.
Emery's return will give UND more depth on the back end.
Without Emery and Bennett Zmolek — UND's top two right-shot defensemen — the Fighting Hawks have heavily relied on sophomores Jake Livanavage, Abram Wiebe and Caleb MacDonald.
Last weekend at Omaha, Livanavage played more than 28 minutes each night. Wiebe played more than 25 minutes each night. MacDonald played more than 21.
Emery has averaged 19:33 per night this season — second-most of any NCHC freshman. He has no goals, one assist and a plus-4 rating.
Emery is the youngest player in the NCHC.
Friday's semifinals: Denver vs. Arizona State, 4 p.m., UND vs. Western Michigan, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday's championship: Semifinal winners, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, Minn.
TV: CBS Sports (GF Ch. 314/635 HD).
Radio: The Fox (96.1 FM).
