Predicting Jacksonville Jaguars' 2025 starting defense after free agency
The Jacksonville Jaguars have made 10 free agent signings overall, with two of them coming on the defensive side of the football. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis and safety Eric Murray will be starters right away for the Jaguars.
So, with those two new additions in the secondary, what does the Jaguars' projected starting defense for 2025 look like following free agency?
Of course, the caveat here is that the NFL draft still has to take place, and whether it will be on offense or defense, additional contributors will still be added to the roster, which can change what this lineup projection can look like.
But given what we know now, along with some educated guesses, let's predict who is on the field on defense for the Jaguars come Week 1.
To see what the Jaguars' projected starting offense might look like, you can find that here.
Defensive line: Josh Hines-Allen, DaVon Hamilton, Maason Smith, Travon Walker
This is a position we should expect to see the Jaguars add to heavily in the NFL draft. The defensive tackle position, in particular, could look quite different when it comes to who is starting than what is projected above.
Linebacker: Devin Lloy, Foyesade Oluokun
Since most defensive snaps come from nickel, our projection will have just two linebackers. Perhaps the Jaguars add some depth here since they have so much draft capital, but Lloyd and Oluokun are your starters.
Cornerback: Jarrian Jones, Jourdan Lewis, Tyson Campbell
GM James Gladstone likes the versatility of both Lewis and Jones, but for the bulk of the snaps, I would expect that we see Lewis in the nickel--where he's spent his NFL career--which means Jones moves to the boundary. Adding competition for Jones for playing time should still be on the to-do list.
Safety: Eric Murray, Darnell Savage
If Murray is going to be the deep safety, that suits Savage well, who can play closer to the line of scrimmage, where he's at his best. From a numbers standpoint, depth is still needed here, and competition at strong safety might be on Gladstone's radar as well.
