The Washington Commanders did not address the edge rusher position in free agency. Sure, free agency is still ongoing, and the Commanders could still add a veteran, but the type of impact player they need can only be acquired via trade or next month's 2025 NFL draft.
Washington expressed interest in Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, but those talks went nowhere. And after trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, the Commanders may be focused solely on the draft. Fortunately, it's a good year to need a defensive end/edge rusher. There are several prospects expected to go throughout the first two rounds. While players like Abdul Carter, Mykel Williams, and Jalon Walker may not make it to the Commanders at No. 29 overall, they will have options.
One of those options is Marshall's Mike Green. Green led the FBS with 17 sacks last season, showed up at the Senior Bowl, and looked dominant before finishing the week early. On Tuesday, Marshall held its pro day, and Green put on a show.
Marshall star DE Mike Green, who measured in at 6’3 1/8 and 248 pounds, posted a jaw-dropping 4.25 short shuttle and 6.85 three-cone drill at his Pro Day on Monday — both elite numbers for his position.

Green put on a show. Unlike some players, his testing performance matched his game tape. Go back and watch Green over the last two seasons, and he wrecks games. There are some concerns about his size and length, but at 6-foot-3, 251 pounds, he's somewhat similar in size to Khalil Mack, although he weighs a little less.
The real knock on Green is a pair of sexual assault allegations, one from high school and one at Virginia. He departed Virginia after the 2022 season and transferred to Marshall. While Green has never been charged with a crime, teams will take these things seriously and, for some teams, it could cause Green to drop.
It's unclear what Washington general manager Adam Peters thinks of Green. Just watching him dominate last season, he looks like he'd be a perfect fit for head coach Dan Quinn's defense coming off the edge. If Green fell to the Commanders, he'd immediately answer their most significant need.
