Overtime will be different in the regular season in 2025. At the annual league meeting in Florida on Tuesday, owners voted to mostly approve a proposal by the Philadelphia Eagles, applying postseason overtime rules to the regular season.
It was proposed that the overtime period be extended to 15 minutes as it was years ago and that both teams be guaranteed possession of the football before becoming sudden-death. '
The regular-season rule before this year was a 10-minute overtime period and each team would get one possession unless the team with possession first scored a touchdown or the defense scored.
This coming season, the overtime period will remain 10 minutes, but both teams, whether or not a touchdown is scored on the first overtime possession, will get the ball. We will see if this ends up changing any outcomes.
