In what was a must-win game for the Canucks, Vancouver struggled to generate quality scoring chances against the Blues. St. Louis held a 26-21 even-strength scoring chances advantage while also winning the high-danger scoring chance battle 9-3. Overall, it was not a great night for the Canucks offence, as they were unable to generate a high-danger scoring chance after the second period.
The heatmap provides a good visual as to why Vancouver's high-danger scoring chances total was so low. The Canucks were unable to create shots from in close, with 11 of their 18 shots against Jordan Binnington registering as low-danger. While Vancouver was able to beat him three times from distance, this is not a strategy that will consistently work on a nightly basis.
As for a standout, that would be Nils Höglander, who led the team with an even-strength xGF% of 54.67. During his 16:57 of even-strength ice time, the Canucks held a 6-3 shots advantage while Höglander recorded a primary assist on Brock Boeser's first goal of the game. Over the past few games, Höglander has shown he can be an impactful player in the top six, and it finally looks like he has gained the trust of Rick Tocchet.
To wrap things up, Marcus Pettersson also had a strong game for Vancouver. During his 18:43 of even-strength ice time, the Canucks outscored the opposition 2-1, while two of Vancouver's three high-danger chances were generated with him on the ice. The early returns on Pettersson have been positive, as he has continually shown why management was quick to sign him to an extension after acquiring him.
