Wrapping LSU baseball's sweep by Auburn: What went wrong for Jay Johnson's club

Talk about a butt-whooping.

LSU baseball ace Kade Anderson entered this weekend looking nearly invincible and Auburn got to him for six runs Friday night.

Led by star first baseman Jared Jones, LSU sported one of the top offenses in college baseball with almost an entire starting lineup hitting north of .300 and Auburn silenced them over three games.

Jay Johnson’s team looked off balance, uncomfortable and at the base of the sweep by the hands of No. 11 Auburn (25-10, 9-6 SEC), LSU (31-6, 10-5) played like the inferior club.

LSU will look to correct course next week, starting Tuesday night against McNeese before hosting Alabama for a series starting Thursday night.

What went wrong for LSU baseball's offense vs Auburn

At one point from game two Saturday night bleeding into the series finale Sunday, LSU was 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position. The offense had opportunities. It just couldn’t come through.

For the weekend, LSU managed just four hits with runners on either second or third base, making its total for the three games 4 for 27. The lineup mustered two or more hits in a single inning just five times in three games.

LSU’s offense had no footing and at times, appeared to not have much of a purposeful approach at the plate.

One thing Johnson and his staff and team can takeaway from losing all three games at Auburn that’s a positive, is how LSU’s bullpen pitched.

Eight relievers entered the game over the weekend, all facing somewhere between a one to three-run deficit. The corps combined to surrender just two runs over 12 2/3 innings pitched.

Zac Cowan, who pitched 4 2/3 frames, and Casan Evans kept LSU in the game Sunday to give them a chance to salvage a game in the series Sunday afternoon, but the offense couldn’t step up.

Freshman Mavrick Rizy navigated two innings Friday night, giving up just one run and keeping LSU within striking distance.
