Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry says she is "really excited about the opportunity" to play for Hampshire this summer and that she spoke with former coach Charlotte Edwards about the move.

The 34-year-old signed on Thursday as an overseas player for the Hawks in the inaugural Women's T20 Blast.

She will join up with the squad in July and be available for six matches in the Blast, as well as two One-Day Cup fixtures.

"I am really fortunate to have known Lottie for a while now," Perry told BBC South Today.

"She was the Sydney Sixers coach as well up until her appointment with England.

"So I had a lot of discussions with her over the last 12 months or so about coming over to Hampshire, obviously things have changed a little now though.

"But I know that Paul (Prichard) has very capable hands and will take us forward really well, I'm looking forward to getting to know him a little bit and I know some of the girls, but it will be great to meet the whole team and get to play alongside some wonderful players.

"It feels like a great time in the game and it's just been lots of fun to be part of it."

Durham, Essex, Hampshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Surrey and Warwickshire were all awarded tier one status, replacing the regions that have competed in the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in recent years.

When Perry joins the Hawks she will be part of the first Hampshire group to compete in this new format.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to come over during the summer and play with Hampshire," she added.

"I've heard so many great things about the county and obviously seen how successful they've been.

"I think there has been lots of exciting things over the last twelve months for women's cricket in general.

"The change in the county system in the UK and what that will mean for the women's game, but equally I think what's been happening globally across the board there's been so many great and exciting opportunities for more and more ...
