Patriots owner Robert Kraft shares honest thoughts on retirement

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about stepping down from his position due to age. However, the 83-year-old quickly swatted down the notion of retirement.

“First of all, I think I’m 35," said Kraft. "And you all will laugh when I say it. Look, I was little kid sitting on one of those benches dreaming about owning this team and bring a winning culture here. I said after my family, this team and this foundation to combat hate and antisemitism—those are my passions.

"As far as succession, succession is there. I have my eldest son Jonathan has been part of every key decision I've made for the last 30 odd years and is a full partner in everything. ...Let’s see what happens over the next two to three years.”

Kraft has been an integral part of the success in New England. He acquired the organization in 1994 for $172 million and watched it grow into one of the most successful sports franchises in history.

The brunt of the success came after Kraft gave legendary coach Bill Belichick nearly complete control over the team in 2000. Belichick went on to create the greatest dynasty in NFL history by leading the franchise to six Super Bowls in 19 years.

Kraft turns 84 years old in June, and the Patriots haven't been to the playoffs since the 2021 season. However, there's hope that they can finally turn things around with Mike Vrabel as the new head coach.

The Kraft family has become a part of the sports fabric of the New England region. It’s hard to imagine any other family or entity taking control of the Patriots. However, that doesn't appear to be the case any time soon with Robert Kraft naming his son, Jonathan Kraft, as his successor.
