Pair of Petoskey hockey standouts claim all-state honors
Up and down moments come for every program, no matter the sport.
The Petoskey hockey team has had all forms over the last handful of seasons, from a 21-win conference title season, to a three-win campaign.
Then, the 2024-25 season came with all pieces of highs and lows. It certainly ended on one of those high notes, however, in the state quarterfinal round.
Now, it gets capped with multiple all-state honors.
The Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association recently released its collection of all-state teams and a pair of Northmen earned recognition in Division 3.
Both junior forward Madden Pateman and sophomore defenseman Anderson Ward claimed honors for Petoskey.
Pateman claimed honorable mention behind a team-high 16 goals and added 21 assists, with two goals and three assists coming during the postseason run.
His top performance of the season came in a three-goal, one assist game against Wyandotte Roosevelt. Pateman also had the game-winning goal in double overtime to help deliver the regional championship.
For Ward, a starter since his freshman campaign a year ago, a team-high 42 points came behind 15 goals and 27 assists. He had at least three points in eight games.

Ward’s best performance came against Negaunee in a two-goal, four-assist game. He also added a hat-trick against Cadillac.
Along with the two for Petoskey, the Sault Area had Nick Wood earn second team as a forward in Division 3, Cale Bell claimed second team defenseman and Korsen Pace earned honorable mention as a defenseman.
For Alpena, who earned a Big North title and 5-2 quarterfinal victory over the Northmen after falling twice to Petoskey during the regular season, Gavin Winterstein and Ethan Walker each earned first team in Division 3.
Traverse City West’s Kallen Ray earned second team in Division 1, then Drew Zrimec of TC Central earned second team in Division 2, while being joined by teammates Arthur McManus and Luke Weaver as honorable mention recipients.
The coaches association also released its 2024-25 Dream Team on Monday, regardless of division, which included: Midland Dow’s Billy VanSumeren, Peter Rosa of Birmingham Brother Rice, Jackson Rilei of Calumet, Detroit County Day’s Brian Apple, Hartland’s Braden Pietila, Brayden Grange of Marquette and Midland Dow’s Colin Lemanski in goal.
In the MHSAA state championships, held earlier this month at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Detroit Catholic Central earned a 4-1 win over Howell to claim the Division 1 title, Flint Powers Catholic won in Division 2 with a 3-2 overtime win over Livonia Stevenson, then Orchard Lake St. Mary’s defeated Cranbrook Kingswood 3-0 in Division 3.
