The Green Bay Packers are expecting second-year offensive lineman Jordan Morgan to "really emerge" as a player in 2025, and the team is planning to give their 2024 first-round pick a legitimate chance to win the starting job at left tackle.
Morgan, who played left tackle almost exclusively at Arizona, was cross-trained at tackle and guard as a first-year pro player in 2024. He ended up competing with Sean Rhyan to start at right guard, and he eventually made his first NFL start at left guard in Week 9 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.
On Monday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said Morgan will "certainly get a shot" to play left tackle while getting reps at multiple positions in 2025.
Three spots along the offensive line look set in stone: Aaron Banks at left guard, Elgton Jenkins at center and Zach Tom at right tackle. It's sounds like Morgan, the 25th overall pick in 2024, will have a chance to win a starting job at the two other spots, either left tackle -- against Rasheed Walker -- or right guard, again facing Rhyan.
"We're going to have a lot of competition there," Gutekunst said Monday. "It will be good to see that competition and we'll be better for it."
Walker, the starter at left tackle over the last two seasons, is entering a contract year in 2025. Gutekunst said Walker has done a lot of "really good things" and doesn't necessarily need to show anything this year to get a new deal. However, Morgan winning the job outright at left tackle would give the Packers a reason to pass on giving out big money to Walker while having Morgan under team control contractually for at least the next three seasons.
Morgan didn't play a single snap at left tackle as a rookie. While standing 6-6, his arms land on the shorter side length-wise, and for that reason many saw him as a guard prospect entering the NFL. The Packers have maintained since the draft that they believe Morgan -- who gave up only three sacks and 30 total pressures during his final two seasons at Arizona -- can play tackle in the NFL. His chance to prove it is coming up.
