Oregon basketball vs. Liberty in men's NCAA Tournament: March Madness 'never gets old'
After a two-month stretch that included five long road trips to middle America, Oregon is opening the men's NCAA Tournament as close to home as it possibly could.
The men's March Madness basketball bracket was revealed Sunday afternoon and the Ducks earned a No. 5 seed and are headed to the Seattle Regional for a game Friday against No. 12 Liberty at Climate Pledge Arena.
“It never gets old," coach Dana Altman said not long after the Selection Sunday bracket announcement, which the team watched with a group of supporters in the Founders Club at Matthew Knight Arena.
The game will tip-off at approximately 7:10 p.m., shortly after the conclusion of the game between No. 4 Arizona vs. No. 13 Akron.
The winners of those two games will play Sunday. That winner will advance to Newark, N.J. and a potential Sweet 16 game against No. 1 seed Duke on March 27, barring any first-weekend upsets.
“It feels good to feel like we might actually have a home game for once," guard Jadrian Tracey said. "The Big Ten Tournament felt like it was an away game both games … and it’s a quick 45-minute flight.”
Oregon (24-9) ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak to finish in eighth place in the Big Ten standings. It defeated Indiana in its opening game of the conference tournament this past Thursday in Indianapolis for its eighth straight win, then lost to Michigan State in the quarterfinals on Friday.
This will be the Ducks' second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the ninth in Altman's 15 years with the team.
Oregon will face a Liberty (28-6) team that won the Conference USA regular-season title and the conference championship tournament.
“I’ve never seen them play so we’ll get busy tonight," Altman said. "You don’t win 28 games by accident.”
The Flames have won five straight and 11 of their last 12 to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021.
“Did Liberty win their conference tournament? Yeah? Then they got to be a good a team," guard Keeshawn Barthelemy said. "They’re going to be ready and that 5-12 matchup is always something to look at. … Liberty is going to be ready and we have to be ready too, so I’m excited.”
