The Oklahoma Sooners may be closing in on their first defensive commitment in the 2026 recruiting class. After recently hosting cornerback Ryan Gilbert in Norman, the Sooners received multiple projections to land the talented cornerback out of Forney, Texas.
Collin Kennedy of Sooners Illustrated and 247Sports issued a crystal ball prediction favoring the Sooners on Monday. Parker Thune of OUInsider and Rivals put in a futurecast predicting Gilbert to commit to the Oklahoma Sooners on Monday as well.
Gilbert is considered a three-star prospect but is the No. 10 nickel cornerback in the class, according to Rivals. Gilbert has a strong athletic profile and is a competitive player. He plays bigger than his 5-10, 170-pound frame might indicate. He plays fast. Gilbert shows off the ability to match well in man coverage. When playing trail technique, he does a good job staying with his receiver by feel, allowing him to look back for the football to make a play. He drives on the football well when playing off coverage and is a willing tackler in run support. Gilbert does a great job with his hands to break up passes even after it looks like the wide receiver is about to secure the catch.
He looks like a player that could have a similar impact as Oklahoma defensive back Kendal Dolby, who has become a star at the cheetah position in Brent Venables' defense. And as things stand right now, it looks like the Sooners are the trending favorite to land the talented cornerback.
