DAYTON — The Perry High School boys basketball team looks to finish off its remarkable tournament run with a state championship this evening at University of Dayton Arena.
The Panthers (14-13) meet Westerville North in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state final. The Panthers earned their first trip to a state title game with a 66-63 state semifinal win over North Royalton this past Sunday.

What to know about Perry basketball
- The Panthers (14-13) was the No. 15 seed in Northeast Ohio and has beaten, in order, the 10, 9, 2, 17 and 1 seeds from the Northeast.
- This is just the second Perry team to reach a state tournament, joining the 1991 Panthers, who qualified in Division I and lost in the semifinals to eventual state champion Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph.
- Luke Wolf, a 6-foot-6 senior, provided the decisive points in the last second and at buzzer in Perry's district final and regional semifinal wins. He made three free throws with three-tenths of second left in the win over Solon before his buzzer-beating 3 eliminated Harding.
- Senior guard Drake Jacobsen led they way against Shaker Heights, scoring 20 points. Wolf added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Darnell McLeod scored 10 points, and 6-5 junior Preston Dazey totaled eight points and nine rebounds.
- Wolf and Dazey each scored 18 points in the state semifinal win over North Royalton. McLeod finished with 13 and Drake Jacobsen added 11.
- Wolf made the six-man, first-team All-Federal League Team. Jacobsen earned All-Federal League honorable mention.
- Wolf finished the regular season ranked sixth in Stark County in scoring average (17.2) and third in foul shooting (.828), while also being among the county leaders in rebounding (6.7) and 3-point shooting (.376). He enters the state tournament averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals a game.
- Jacobsen was a 40.7% 3-point shooter during the season in averaging 11.0 points. Dazey (.565) and Nico Martelli (.562) each shot well over 50% from the floor for the Panthers.
- Perry junior point guard Mike Haley was cleared to practice this week. Haley had his appendix removed earlier this month and has missed the team's last four tournament games.
- Perry's current six-game winning streak is its longest of the season. The Panthers won four in a row to open the season.
- Perry's win over North Royalton stopped the Bears' 24-game wining streak. To become state champions, the Panthers will have to snap Westerville North's 23-game winning streak.
What to know about Westerville North basketball
- Westerville North (24-2) was the No. 1 overall seed in the Central District and eliminated the 20, 12, 11 and 5 seeds from its own district and the No. 3 seed from the Northwest District in the state semis.
- Westerville North was a district runner-up in Division I a year ago.
- The Warriors have eclipsed 100 points twice and set a single-game school record by scoring 111 against Whetstone. They have won their five postseason games by an average of 39.6 points.
- Westerville North is led by senior guards Tai Perkins and Micah Young, who are step-brothers. They each have had big recent tournament games. Young is a four-year starter and Perkins has started the last three years.
- Perkins hit a school-record eight 3s and scored 33 points in the regional finals.
- Young totaled 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the state semifinals.
- The 6-1 Perkins is an Akron Zips recruit, and is the Ohio Capital Conference and Central District Player of the Year. He is a McDonald's All-American Game nominee, to. He averages 14.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
- Young is a Concord recruit. He averages 14.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7.
Stark County final four flavor
Perry and Louisville are the first Stark County boys basketball teams to make it to a state championship game since Jackson won the Division I state title in 2017. The last time two county teams made it to the final four in the same postseason was 2004, when Canton McKinley lost in a Division I state semifinal to Hamilton and Northwest lost in the Division II state final to Ottawa-Glandorf. This is the first time two county teams have made it to the state championship game in the same year.
OHSAA boys basketball state champions from Stark County
Louisville and Perry will try to join this list of boys basketball state champions from Stark County: Canton McKinley in 1984, 2005 and 2006; Jackson in 2010 and 2017; Canton Lehman in 1971; North Canton in 1939; and Canal Fulton in 1938.
