NYSPHSAA boys basketball championships: Woodlands takes on Marcellus for Class B title
After being eliminated in the semifinals a year ago, Woodlands is playing with purpose and is one win away from the program's first NYSPHSAA title since 2015. We'll be posting frequent updates from today's Class B championship game against Marcellus at Visions Veterans Arena here. Check back this afternoon for complete game coverage.
STARTING LINEUPS
Woodlands: Maxwell Abrahams, Aaron Woodberry, Sebastian Benitez, Nerva Cherubin, Jamison Stevens.
Marcellus: Connor Ciota, Mitchell Donegan, Damyn LeClair, Tucker Burnett, Dominick Gosh-Sandy.
First quarter
Woodlands is already doing what it does best. Open with two stops, a soft 15-footer from Aaron Woodberry and then a bucket in the post from Jamison Stevens. ... Mustangs are pushing back hard. Mitchell Donegan hits a pair of 3s and Tucker Burnett gives the Section 3 champs a 10-7 lead with 3:49 to go in the quarter. ... Marcellus has a little more fire right now. Connor Ciota goes end to end and it's a 14-11 lead. Falcons have turned the ball over four times already. ... Stevens offensive board and putback cuts the deficit to three with 22 seconds left in the quarter. End 1: Marcellus 17, Woodlands 13.
Second quarter
Woodlands is slowing it down and pounding the ball in to Stevens on the post. He scores to cut the deficit to 17-15 with 4:43 to go in the half. ... Noah Cherubin digs out offensive rebounds, gets the and-one. Falcons are up 20-19. ... Stevens hits a corner 3 with 3:12 to go in the half and has Woodlands up 23-21.
