NFL Insider: Aaron Rodgers would 'obviously' start for Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings have been discussing what they can do to solidify their quarterback group for this upcoming season for some time now. After losing Daniel Jones in free agency, the conversation turned to "who is the veteran we can add to the roster now?" For all intents and purposes, that discussion has seemingly centered around Aaron Rodgers.
According to one inside, if the team goes in the direction of Aaron Rodgers, he would become the "obvious" starter.
ESPN's Dan Graziano published some notes and takeaways from free agency, including one prediction: "The Vikings will win the NFC North." He writes that the idea is an "overreaction" and explains why, starting with the quarterback discussion.
"Well, at least until we get some clarity on the Vikings' quarterback situation. Sam Darnold, who started for them last season, left to sign with the Seahawks. J.J. McCarthy, who was the 10th pick in last year's draft but missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury, is ostensibly in line to start. But he's an unknown, and the team is -- at least at this writing -- considering signing Aaron Rodgers, who would obviously start ahead of him."
If the Vikings were to go in the direction of McCarthy it would create a new list of issues, none of which are immediately involving the four-time NFL MVP. The question that needs to be asked is whether McCarthy is healthy or if he is ready for a starting role in the NFL. The Vikings drafted him, knowing he would be a project, but that isn't the issue. The longer it takes for him to play, though, the longer it is going to take for this team to win important games.
A rookie quarterback presents a small window for teams to win while paying other positions, the Vikings shouldn't waste another year of that.
