NFL free agency: Browns starter Bailey Zappe signs with Chiefs
After one season with the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Bailey Zappe is heading back to the Kansas City Chiefs.
This is the second quarterback who was in the room in 2024 to depart from the roster this offseason. Fellow quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was packaged up with a fifth round pick and sent to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Kenny Pickett earlier this week as well.
Zappe was signed off of the Chiefs' practice squad during the 2024 season after the achilles injury to starting quarterback Deshaun Watson. He even got the opportunity to start the season finale game against the Baltimore Ravens, where he went 16-of-31 passing for 170 yards, one touchdown pass, and two interceptions.
He will now be the third quarterback on the Chiefs' depth chart after they just signed Gardner Minshew to back up Patrick Mahomes.
The Browns were adamant they were going to overhaul the quarterback room this offseason, and that has come to fruition thus far. First, it was Thompson-Robinson who was traded, Pickett who was added to the room, and now Zappe is off to the Chiefs. Do not expect this to be close to the last move made by the Browns at the quarterback position as Jameis Winston is still on the market and the Browns are expected to add another veteran to the roster in NFL free agency.
