Newport County have confirmed an investigation is under way after an alleged racist action during the game against Colchester United.

The alleged incident, directed towards an opposition player, occurred during the first half of the League Two fixture at Rodney Parade which Colchester won 2-0

County said they were working closely with Gwent Police and Colchester United and that the individual alleged to have carried out the act had been identified.

In a statement the club said: "Newport County strongly condemns all forms of racism, prejudice, and discrimination.

"We operate a strict zero-tolerance policy towards such behaviour, and any actions of this nature have no place at our club, in football, or in society.

"While this is an alleged incident at this stage, we would like to remind all supporters that this type of conduct is completely unacceptable and deeply harmful.

"We remain fully committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, both on and off the pitch."

Colchester manager Danny Cowley said: "It's not a reflection on Newport County, it's a reflection on society.

"It's an incident that's being investigated, so I can't say much more.

"But we'll never walk past these incidents. The moment we do, we accept it. And that's not acceptable in the 21st century. It's not what we want for our world."

Exiles head coach Nelson Jardim said: "I didn't see the incident, but will always be against that type of abuse, that's all I can say.

"I am sure the club will deal with it properly behind the scenes."
