New York Giants' Joe Schoen won't commit to QB in draft: 'We could go any position'

The New York Giants have been busy this offseason, signing free agents to key need positions and also adding two veteran quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

General manager Joe Schoen recently sat down with Dan Salomone of Giants.com and discussed what should happen next. Naturally, the 2025 NFL draft, which is less than a month away, will be the focus of the front office.

Schoen was asked if the recent signings, especially at quarterback, will affect the Giants' draft plans, specifically in the first round, where they hold the third overall selection.

"Since I've been here, we've tried to set it up on draft day that we could go play a game [that day]," said Schoen.

"I feel like we're there now. That way you don't get backed into a corner or force yourself to do anything. The only year that didn't happen was probably my first year. We had to cut several players just to get under the salary cap. There were a lot more holes, so maybe you get into some need-based picks in that scenario.

"But now we're in a situation where you go through the roster and say, OK, throughout the draft, where can we still upgrade? We're not done. We still want to upgrade. We have five picks in the top 105.

"We could go any position, so we're not ruling any position out."

Since taking over the reins of the Giants in 2022, Schoen has always kept his options open and it appears he will continue to do so. Surely the Giants would like to see their top-rated player (presumably Miami quarterback Cam Ward) fall to them, but if he doesn't Schoen has a Plan B, C and D for every scenario.

Schoen's first two drafts were average, but he redeemed himself with last year's six-man class. All six players were major contributors in their first seasons with the club.
