MUNCIE — A second head coach at Muncie Central has resigned this week.
One day after boys basketball head coach Justin Ullom announced his resignation from the position, the school announced that football coach Kyle Padgett has also resigned.
"I believe the two greatest titles a man can have are 'Dad' and 'Coach.' I have spent the past nine years concentrating on my 'Coach' title. It is now time for me to step back as a head coach and concentrate on my 'Dad' title," Padgett said.
"The past three years at Muncie Central have been among the best of my life. I will be forever grateful for the people I have met and the experiences we have shared. I want to thank my staff, players, and parents for all the effort that was put in to build this culture into what it is today. We raised the standard and built a strong foundation for the future. Muncie Central made me a better coach, a better teacher, and most importantly, a better man."
Padgett handed in his letter of resignation Monday, but the school announced the moves concurrently on Thursday. According to Padgett, he was unaware of Ullom's plans to resign when he made his decision, and the two resignations were unrelated.
Padgett, like Ullom, joined Muncie Central in 2022, with the two men joining the Bearcats a few months apart. Padgett has also been part of Muncie Central's teaching staff as a physical education teacher and will continue in that role through the end of the school year.
The Bearcats went 10-20 in three seasons under Padgett. He is most proud of the team's effort in the classroom during his tenure with 13 Academic All-State players and a National Football Foundation Academic All-American.
Padgett is leaving Muncie Central to become the strength and conditioning coordinator and running backs coach at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis. The move brings Padgett closer to his home and will give him more time with his family, which he made clear was the primary factor in his decision.
