FAMU basketball star, SWAC Player of the Year Sterling Young to reportedly enter transfer portal
The Southwestern Athletic Conference’s top men’s basketball player may play elsewhere this season.
Florida A&M guard Sterling Young will reportedly enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens next Monday, March 24, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.
Young played just a lone season for the Rattlers after stints at fellow Division I school Charlotte 49ers and Pratt Community College.

At FAMU, the Queens, New York native tied for first in the SWAC with 17 points per game, and averaged two rebounds, and 1.7 assists as a senior in 28 games. Young earned the SWAC’s Player of the Year honor for his 2024-2025 performance, becoming the second FAMU player to win the award alongside MJ Randolph in 2021-2022.
Young was a vital part of the FAMU men’s basketball’s turnaround season, which saw the program finish with a 14-17 record under first-year head coach Patrick Crarey II. The Rattlers’ 14 victories were the most wins in a season since 2008.
After a two-season hiatus, FAMU also returned to the postseason and earned its first-ever SWAC Tournament victory, beating Prairie View A&M 75-66 in the first round. The Rattlers fell to eventual SWAC Tournament runners-up Jackson State 91-76 in the quarterfinals.
Young was out with an injury during the SWAC Tournament.
