High School Lacrosse: What to know for Beaver Valley teams as 2025 season begins
The high school lacrosse season will get underway in the next several days, and teams in the Beaver Valley will look to make an impact during the 2025 season.
As teams across the area prepare for the regular season, here is a breakdown of each Beaver Valley boys and girls program competing this season.
Boys Lacrosse
Moon Area
2024 Record: 7-10, 5-5 Class 2A Section II
While Moon Area will be losing its leading scorer from a year ago, the team returns a bulk of its offensive production, including four juniors that recorded over 20 goals.
Midfielder Cole Seymour returns as the team’s leading goal scorer at 31. The team also brings back senior attackers Alec Batchelor and Ben Witenski who recorded 29 and 26 goals, respectively, and junior Brody Eckert, who netted 23.
Moon Area will look to get back into the postseason after qualifying last season.
Quaker Valley
2024 Record: 7-7, 5-5 Class 2A Section II
Quaker Valley returns a young roster but is now experienced from a season ago after finishing sixth in Section II play. The team fell to No. 5 seed Bethel Park in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs in 2024.
Sewickley Academy
2024 Record: 2-9, 2-8 Class 2A Section II
Sewickley Academy returns a young roster that graduated just two seniors from a season ago. After finishing second to last in section II in Class 2A, the team will use the experience that it gained last year to seek improvement.
Girls Lacrosse
Moon Area
2024 Record: 12-6, 7-4 Class 3A Section II
It's a new era for Moon Area, which brings in a new coaching staff.
The school did not have to look far, as it hired former Robert Morris defender Mackenzie Bell in December. She completed her staff with her teammates from RMU, Haley Mojsej and Julia Koterwas.
Moon Area moves up to Class 3A after placing fifth in its section in Class 2A last year. It returns juniors Reese Keslar, Marleigh Therrien and senior Avery Machusko.
Ambridge
2024 Record: 0-15, 0-11 Class 2A Section II
Ambridge will bring back more experience compared to last season, returning its leading scorer in senior Mara Ilko, who netted 16 goals.
The team will be in a tough section once again as it will face some of the top teams in the classification including back-to-back WPIAL champion Mars.
Blackhawk
2024 Record: 15-3, 9-2 Class 2A Section II
For the first time in 19 seasons, Blackhawk will be without Kevin White as coach. Mark Kinger takes over in 2025.
Last season, Blackhawk took a berth in the WPIAL quarterfinals before falling to Penn-Trafford 15-14.
The team will be without Mia Piocquidio, who scored 100 goals last season, along with Ryleigh McKnight and Chloe Huston who all were valuable assets.
However, the team will return Mia Sheesley, Andrea Kinger, Lauren Fair, Stella Wright and Ava Pagani who will all look to fill the void for the players who graduated.
Quaker Valley
2024 Record: 8-8, 6-5 Class 2A Section II
The team returns a seasoned roster after losing just three seniors from 2024.
Lucy Roig returns for her junior campaign after a team-high 61 goals, while junior Alexa Westwood netted 36 and led the team in assists with 22. Mia Floro also returns for her junior season after 11 goals.
Goalkeeper Emily Reiner also returns for her senior season after posting a .616 save percentage, including two shutouts.
Sewickley Academy
2024 Record: 7-6, 4-4 Class 2A Section II
After losing the program’s leading scorer from the past two seasons in Libby Eannarino, Sewickley Academy will be in rebuild mode with a young roster.
The team does return senior attacker Lauren Retzlaff, sophomore Emma Eannarino, and midfielder Grace Jardini while sophomore goalkeeper Sophia DiCicco looks to make an impact this year.
