The Milwaukee Wave forced overtime with the two-time defending champion Chihuahua Savage but missed a chance to advance to the MASL finals with a 7-6 loss Sunday in Oceanside, California.
Pedro Castaneda scored the golden goal when he took a pass from Jose Gilberto Lopez near midfield, streaked down the left side and then buried a left-footer past diving Wave goalkeeper William Banahene.
Midseason acquisition Franck Tayou had tied the score for the Wave with a header off a restart with 3:29 left in regulation, moments after the Savage had gone ahead.
Chihuahua outshot the Milwaukee, 28-16. Banahene finished with 12 saves, while the Savage’s Diego Reynoso and Christian Hernandez combined for six.
The teams also played in the regular season in Milwaukee, with Chihuahua also winning, 7-6, in OT.
Milwaukee advanced to the semifinals with an 11-7 victory over the Kansas City Comets on Saturday in the last of four quarterfinals. The Savage had beaten the St. Louis Ambush, 5-1, on Friday. All quarterfinal and semifinal games were played at the Frontwave Arena, the home of the San Diego Sockers.
The Wave finished with 15 wins, eight regulation losses and three overtime losses.
Chihuahua will meet the winner of the second semifinal between the Sockers and the Baltimore Blast in the Ron Newman Cup championship series.
