Michigan women's basketball pummeled by Notre Dame 76-55 in March Madness second round
Michigan women's basketball season came to a crashing end Sunday afternoon in the second round of the women's NCAA tournament.
The 6-seed Wolverines fought valiantly, but ultimately succumbed to powerhouse Notre Dame 76-55 in March Madness on the 3-seed Irish's home floor at Purcell Pavilion on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
Notre Dame (28-5) sophomore star Hannah Hidalgo poured in 21 points and the Irish proved too much for the Wolverines (23-11) defense. The Irish move onto the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight season under coach Niele Ivey, mother of Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey. The Irish will play Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama against either 2-seed TCU or 7-seed Louisville.
Olivia Olson, the Big Ten co-freshman of the year, led the Wolverines with 20 points. Michigan committed 16 turnovers and shot just 36.8% (21-for-57). The Irish shot 50.9%.
Notre Dame, which beat Stephen F. Austin 106-54 in the first round, threw the first punch at Michigan, opening the game with an 11-2 run and used a 15-2 run to close the first quarter to build a 32-12 advantage. The lead was 46-28 at the half despite 12 points from Olson, one of three freshmen starters for the Wolverines, who won the second quarter 16-14.
But third-quarter turnovers prevented Michigan from gaining ground as Notre Dame pulled ahead by more than 30 early in the fourth.
Michigan entered Sunday as a 14½-point underdog. It advanced past Iowa State in Friday's first round using a fourth-quarter comeback for an 80-74 win.
