Max Homa has a new caddie on the bag this week after splitting with childhood friend Joe Greiner.
“Joe and I made memories for a lifetime and can’t be more thankful for all the hard work. We have parted ways and it will be sad to see him go,” Homa told PGA Tour.com in a statement.
It is the latest in a series of changes for Homa, 34, who has changed coach (from Mark Blackburn to John Scott Rattan), apparel manufacturer (Puma to Lululemon) and equipment maker (Titleist to Cobra) since the fall.
Homa, who has been mired in a slump dating to last year’s Masters, is playing this week at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. He has Bill Harke, a veteran caddie, who has worked previously for Chris Kirk and Colt Knost among others, on the bag this week.
Homa and Greiner have said that they met each other when they were just six years old. They used to play golf together at Vista Valencia Golf Club in California, where Greiner holds the course record at the club's par-3 golf course.
Greiner worked for Homa briefly at the start of his pro career in 2013 but spent time with Kevin Chappell before reuniting with Homa in 2019 when Chappell was sidelined with an injury. Homa has won six times since 2019 and represented the U.S. in the last two international team competitions.
But he has struggled mightily of late, missing the cut in his last four starts. Homa hasn’t made a cut in an event with a 36-hole cut since the 2024 British Open in July. He sits 157th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Greiner missed the start of the season for personal reasons, with Homa using Michael Greller, Jordan Spieth’s regular caddie, at the Sentry in Maui.
Speaking of his on-course struggles after shooting 79-71 at the Players Championship, Homa said, “It’s hard to care this much about something and just not get anything out of it…It’s like you’re in a very toxic relationship. I might be the toxic one, but it’s still toxic.”
It’s the end of a fruitful partnership on the course. Greiner is too good of a caddie to be out of work for long and time will tell whether Homa has found his new permanent bag man.
