Man Utd injury news: Youngster could return from injury against Man City but defender a doubt

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says Kobbie Mainoo could return from injury in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Mainoo has been out since the start of February and has missed nine games with a muscle problem.

Mason Mount, meanwhile, is in contention to start having not done so since December, after returning from injury off the bench in United’s defeat to Nottingham Forest.

On Mount, Amorim said: “Yes, he is fit enough to start, but we must manage him. Mason has trained a lot of times, getting the load in his body. Sometimes the mind is more important than the body. He is fit to play and we will see on Sunday.”

The 26-year-old has missed significant game time in the two years since he joined the club from Chelsea in a £55 million move.

Kobbie Mainoo likely will not be ready to start, however, but could return to the squad.

“I think Kobbie is returning to training, so we will see, we will assess for this game. He cannot play a full game, it’s a long time without training.”

But Mathjis de Ligt has picked up a knock which makes him a doubt for the game, Amorim revealed.

“I think Matthijs has an issue, it’s something during the game that we have to assess,” he said. “The rest is normal.”

United face their rivals on Sunday following the news that legendary Man City figure Kevin De Bruyne will be departing the club at the end of this season.

Amorim gave his thoughts on the Belgian, saying: “He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The time passes to everyone so that is a natural thing. He improved the league. He was on the wrong side of Manchester. I wish him good luck.”

Amorim knows a good result is crucial this weekend, especially after a disappointing loss midweek against Forest.
