Lubbock Christian women's basketball falls to Pittsburg State in D-II Elite Eight
Karenna Gerber had 24 points and 16 rebounds, leading Pittsburg State past the Lubbock Christian University women's basketball team 66-55 on Monday night in the Elite Eight of the Division II NCAA Tournament.
Grace Pyle added 16 points and Maycee James 11 for Pittsburg State, located in Pittsburg, Kansas. The Elite Eight and the remaining two rounds of the tournament unfold in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Duquesne's home arena.
The semifinals are Wednesday with No. 4 seed Pittsburg State (33-3) playing No. 1 seed Grand Valley State (36-2) and No. 3 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills (35-1) taking on No. 7 seed Union, Tennessee. (33-3). Pittsburg State had lost in its two previous Elite Eight appearances in 2012 and 2016.
Grace Foster, the school career scoring leader, finished with 23 points for LCU (32-5), which was the No. 5 seed after winning the South Central Region. The Lady Chaps got 11 points each from senior guards Maci Maddox and Audrey Robertson. Kennedy Chappell chipped in four.
Foster's basket with 1:17 left drew LCU within 58-53, but Pittsburg State scored the next six points.
Pittsburg State led nearly the entire game, mostly by single digits. The Gorillas used an 8-0 run starting the second half to go up 39-29. They were up 44-33 midway through the third quarter, and Maddox made a 3-point goal that pulled the Lady Chaps back within 46-41 going to the fourth.
On Sunday, Robertson, a senior guard from Kerrville Tivy, won The Elite 90 award for the Division II Elite Eight. The award is presented to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
LCU was in the Elite Eight for the fifth time since becoming an NCAA program. The Lady Chaps won the national championship in 2016, 2019 and 2021. They lost in the 2018 Elite Eight to Central Missouri.
In Monday's other Elite Eight games, Grand Valley State beat Gannon 60-32; Union upset No. 2 seed Bentley 80-66; and Cal State Dominguez Hills dispatched Coker 82-66.
