In an interview with GQ Sports, LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne revealed why her relationship with former Tigers pitcher Paul Skenes nearly derailed in the early stages.
"He wouldn't follow me back on Instagram," Dunne told GQ. "I was like, 'who is this kid and why won't he follow me back?'"
Skenes, who only recently started receiving more attention thanks to his young MLB career, rarely used his Instagram account at the time in early 2023. By August, the pair were officially together heading into their senior years in Baton Rouge.
During those months, Dunne continued competing in her third year at LSU and Skenes won the college World Series in his inaugural season with the Tigers. He entered the 2023 MLB Draft and was selected first-overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
By the time his rookie season rolled around, Skenes progressed quickly from the minor leagues to the professional level. He started the 2024 All-Star Game for the National League and won Rookie of the Year with Dunne by his side.
The right-handed pitcher is off to a strong start to his sophomore campaign. Through 12.1 innings pitched in two starts, Skenes has a 1.46 ERA and 13 strikeouts. Dunne, despite suffering a season-ending injury, is traveling with LSU to the second round of the NCAA Postseason at the Penn State regional. The Tigers are aiming to defend their national title from a season ago.
