Longtime Texans backup QB Case Keenum says goodbye to Houston, signs deal with Bears

Case Keenum still isn't ready to hang up the cleats.

According to multiple reports, the longtime Houston Texans quarterback has agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $3 million with the Chicago Bears. The 37-year-old heads back to the NFC North after spending the past two seasons serving as the Texans backup behind C.J. Stroud.

Keenum rose to prominence in Minnesota during the 2017 season after leading the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 14-year veteran later signed deals with the Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns before returning to Houston for a third stint with the hometown team.

After starting two games in place of the injured Stroud in 2023, Keenum missed the entire 2024 season after suffering a foot injury in the team's final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. He was already a bubble candidate, so the Texans just placed him on the injured reserve list, which allowed him to stick around the building.

While former starter Davis Mills locked up the No. 2 role after agreeing to a one-year contract extension last offseason, Keenum served as a mentor to Stroud and the young players. All three Texans quarterbacks used to go out to dinner at different restaurants around the area on Fridays, using the time as a bonding session to grow closer.

While Keenum will play elsewhere in 2025, his legacy in Houston is well-secured. The NCAA all-time passing yards leader played for the Cougars before signing with the Texans in 2012, so he'll be welcomed back to the city with open arms whenever he chooses to call it a career.
