LOCAL COLLEGES: UWEC men's tennis team falls in Florida opener
ORLANDO, Fla. — The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team lost to Vassar College 6-1 on Monday in the first dual of its spring break trip. The Blugolds won one match each in singles and doubles, but that was all they could get against the Brewers.
Vassar won two of the three doubles matches to take the single team point up for grabs. Juan Gallego and Ethan Wurtzel prevailed at No. 1 doubles though, winning 7-6.
The Blugolds' lone singles win came at No. 4, where Billy Hughes triumphed in three sets. He won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Otto Schluter took his No. 3 singles match to three sets, but fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Blugolds drop duals in Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team dropped the first two duals of its spring break trip, falling to No. 37 Hope College 4-3 and Trinity College (Conn.) 5-2 on Monday.
The Blugolds won seven total matches on the day.
In the first dual, Hope took the lone team point up for grabs in doubles action by winning two of three matches. Téa Armstrong and Beatriz Felchak won the No. 3 doubles match 7-6.
In singles, Samantha Fuchs won in the No. 1 flight 6-2, 7-5. Liv Herzog prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Reese Burton won 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 at No. 5 singles.
Against Trinity, Fuchs and Anna Lee won the No. 1 doubles match after their opponents retired. It was the Blugolds' only doubles win though, giving the Bantams the team point heading into singles play.
In singles action, Herzog and Burton picked up UW-Eau Claire's only two wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Herzog won in straight sets while Burton won a third-set tiebreaker. Trinity won two singles matches by third-set tiebreak.
BASEBALL
UW-Stout splits games
The Blue Devils opened their doubleheader with an impressive offensive display, defeating LeTourneau University 11-3 at Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola, Florida.
The offense was led by Justin Sedin, who went 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, while Billy Jones added a double and five RBIs. Leyten Bowers also contributed with two hits and three RBIs.
Stout's pitching was just as strong, with Luke Carrier earning the win after throwing 6.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out three. The bullpen shut the door, as Nathan Weckop and Jackson Gugel combined to allow just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
UW-Stout was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 12-7 to Edgewood College in the second game of the day. Edgewood struck early with a five-run second inning and extended their lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Stout fought back with a pair of runs in the fourth and a three-run eighth inning.
Sedin continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run, and two RBIs. Jack Redwine and Michael Pustelnik each had two hits and an RBI.
