Lily Davis, Ed Small recognized as Central Texas high school Athletes of the Year by GASF

Westlake volleyball player Lily Davis and Anderson football player Ed Small were named Central Texas Student-Athletes of Year by the Greater Austin Sports Foundation on Thursday night.

Davis and Small were honored at the annual GASF Hall of Honor ceremony at the Junior League of Austin. They were among eight high school athletes who were nominated for the award for their leadership in their respective sports, the classroom, their campus and community.

The GASF also named four new additions to its Hall of Honor.

While Davis is best known as an All-Central Texas volleyball player with the Chaparrals, she also emerged as an elite beach volleyball player. In September, she and her playing partner won gold at the FIVB U19 World Championships in China. She'll play beach volleyball for Texas.

Small was a two-sport star at Anderson who'll play football at TCU. Last fall he set an Austin school district record for career receiving yards. In addition to his success in football, he also lettered in baseball and is currently participating in spring football at TCU.

The list of girls who were honored at the ceremony included Dripping Springs volleyball player Henley Anderson, Hendrickson swimmer Stephanie Oiesen and Westwood soccer player Mia Wiele. Boys who were recognized included McCallum quarterback Luke Dunham, Stony Point basketball point guard Uzziah Buntyn and Wimberley quarterback Cody Stoever.

Hall of Honor inducts four

As for the Hall of Honor, Ben Johnson was recognized for teaching martial arts to his students of all ages for more than 20 years. He's also is known for giving free self defense training to the mothers of his students.

Kelly Latz was inducted into the Hall of Honor for his volunteer work with various youth sports leagues, with an emphasis on baseball, since 1980. He also trains, schedules and supervises baseball and softball umpires for the Wimberley Youth Sports Association.

Kathy Manning was included for creating one of the first girls basketball leagues in the Austin area. She told the audience she was inspired to have her daughter player in sports exclusively for girls as a volunteer for the Town & Country Optimist Club.
