We've frequently heard Jacksonville Jaguars' GM James Gladstone use the phrase "intangibly rich" when describing the type of players he wants to bring into the organization.
"By being nothing more than who they are and who we know them to be, both on and off the field, they're going to do exactly what we had hoped they do," Gladstone said of the Jaguars' free agent signings during a press conference in early March. "And that levels up this ecosystem."
But what exactly does he mean by that? And with that intangibly rich component playing such a key role in how the Jaguars build their roster, what types of players are they looking for in the NFL draft?
At the NFL league meetings, head coach Liam Coen highlighted some of the characteristics that can make a player intangibly rich. In short, it's a combination of both physical and mental toughness, and loving the game of football.
"That’s guys that truly love and live playing football to that extent," Coen said via Big Cat Country. "We want them to be both mentally and physically tough. Those are things that are going to be kind of non-negotiable for us when it comes down to it."
The Jaguars have a terrific opportunity in this year's draft to add quite a few intangibly rich prospects to their roster by holding 10 selections and being among the teams with the most total draft capital value.
While we saw Gladstone make 10 free agent additions, which as he put it, helped raise the floor of this roster, he still wants to build a team that is primarily constructed through the draft.
So, as always, there are positional needs to prioritize, certain skill sets the Jaguars will covet that fit their offensive and defensive systems, and physical measurements and athletic testing that will all be part of the equation, but perhaps most importantly, before all of these other factors are considered, the focus is on finding the right mentality and an intangibly rich individual.
