A big area of emphasis for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence this offseason is on his footwork.
This crucial element is vital to a quarterback's success from a mechanical standpoint. Everything starts with footwork.
A quarterback's feet need to be in constant movement, they need to follow the eyes as he works through his progressions, and footwork provides the foundation for power and everything else mechanically to fall into place.
So, not surprisingly, given the importance of this, head coach Liam Coen mentioned recently that this is one aspect Lawrence is diving into.
"We're diving into his footwork," Coen recently told SiriusXM NFL Radio, via NFL.com. "Everything with the quarterback position, so much is built on the lower half and the mind. And those are the things that we can truly control. Because the stroke is the stroke for us, that's how we look at it. The stroke is the stroke, and we're not touching that. So really, we're diving into his footwork, some of those mechanics."
A lot falls onto the plate of the head coach, but at the top of the to-do list for Coen is helping Lawrence regain his previous form. Refining his footwork will certainly help, but so will Coen's offensive scheme.
The running game is going to play a vital role in the overall success of the Jaguars' offense, helping to keep Jacksonville ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations--something they faced often in 2024.
In addition to that, the 'illusion of complexity,' as Coen and the rest of the Sean McVay tree calls it, will help keep defenses off-balanced and guessing. This is accomplished through pre-snap motion, running a variety of plays from just a few formations, and running like-plays--or plays that begin similarly but end up quite different.
All of this, and more of course, will help shoulder some of the workload when it comes to getting the passing game back on track by providing Lawrence and the rest of the offense advantageous matchups to exploit.
"He's hungry," said Coen about Lawrence at the NFL league meetings. "I would say that for sure."
With Coen being a first-year head coach, the Jaguars are able to get a head start on offseason programs, which for Jacksonville begins on April 8th.
