Latest report sheds light on why Patriots failed to land DK Metcalf
There have been questions on why the New England Patriots weren't as deeply in on two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf like they were on Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Chris Godwin.
NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran previously reported the Patriots weren't in on Metcalf. However, on Tuesday, he said he has been redirected by sources outside of New England that the team did attempt to trade for the star receiver.
The problem was that Metcalf reportedly didn't want to come to New England.
"I've come to find out that [the Patriots were in on Metcalf]," Curran said, when appearing on "Jones & Keefe." They had conversations. An offer was not made, that's correct. But I've kind of been redirected from folks outside of New England. They were in on him. He didn't want to come here."

Metcalf ended up being traded and signed a new contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It was a surprising move considering the many questions the Steelers currently have at their quarterback position. Meanwhile, the Patriots have a promising young quarterback in Drake Maye, a lot of money to spend and a talented head coach in Mike Vrabel.
Yet, even with all of those things going for the Patriots, it still isn't enough for some players. The only remedy left is to win football games and change the outside perception of the team.
The New England Patriots were primed to get a top-tier wide receiver during the first week of free agency. Now, a new report indicates potential reasons why the Patriots could have missed out.
Some of the Patriots biggest targets went to other places. Chris Godwin resigned with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. D. K. Metcalf chose to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even a player like Davante Adams did not seem to gain much traction when all was said and done. Instead, it appears as though they going to build through the draft.
NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran indicated that the Patriots wanted to protect quarterback Drake Maye in a way, by not getting a veteran pass-catcher.
"The Patriots were exceedingly wary of the negative impact a demanding veteran wideout could have on Maye. As a result, they weren’t in the game on talented guys like DK Metcalf and Davante Adams. The guy they loved – Chris Godwin – signed back with the Buccaneers. So this spot is very much like left tackle. Need one desperately. Have screwed up staffing the position for YEARS. Have a chance at the top of the draft with No. 4 if Travis Hunter is there."
The Patriots undoubtedly need to address the wide receiver position during the draft. There should be options for them with the fourth overall selection, as Curran alludes to. Failure to get at least one impact offensive playmaker could make things difficult for the franchise. The Patriots lacked explosive playmaking weapons in 2024, and they have a golden opportunity to address that in a few weeks.
