Knoxville Marathon and other races take over this weekend: See which streets are closed

The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon will take over the streets this weekend, with five racing events scheduled across April 5 and 6.

The weekend will include the marathon (26.2 miles), a half-marathon (13.1 miles), a four-person relay (26.2 miles separated into four portions), a 5K (3.1 miles) and the Covenant Kids Run (1 mile).

To accommodate the races, some roads will be be closed at times. So if you're trying to drive around town, here are the the streets that will inaccessible over the marathon weekend and the times when you should look for alternate routes in those areas.

Which roads are closed for the Knoxville Marathon?

All race events will begin on the Clinch Avenue viaduct next to the Sunsphere, looking over the World's Fair Park. Streets will be blocked in the center city during racing events.

The Clinch Avenue viaduct from Henley Street to 11th Street will be closed starting at 1 p.m. April 5. It is expected to reopen by 2:30 p.m. April 6.

Parking is restricted on Clinch Avenue between 11th and 16th streets. All vehicles parked there on the evening of April 5 will be towed.

The Knoxville Police Department will assist in maintaining safety during the races.

Kids Run, April 5

The Covenant Kids Run will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday, prompting closures on 11th Street and World's Fair Drive in front of the Knoxville Museum of Art.

  • Temporary closures lasting the duration of the kids run will be on Clinch and White avenues between 11th and 13th streets.
  • A portion of 13th Street will be closed between Clinch and White avenues, according to a Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon news release.

5K, April 5

The 5K will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, with road closures throughout the Fort Sanders neighborhood.

  • Clinch Avenue will be closed for the 5K, and White Avenue will be closed from James Agee to 22nd Street
  • 22nd Street from White to Clinch avenues
  • 23rd Street from Clinch to Grand avenues
  • Forest Avenue from 13th to 21st streets
  • Grand Avenue from 19th to 23rd streets
  • 21st Streets from Grand to Forest avenues

Knoxville Marathon, April 6

The marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, creating road closures from 7:20 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through downtown Knoxville and in the Fort Sanders, Sequoyah Hills, Fourth and Gill, Parkridge, Island Home and Old Sevier neighborhoods.

  • Lake Loudoun Boulevard on the southbound lanes from Todd Helton Drive to Neyland Drive
  • Neyland Drive eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed from Walnut Street to Kingston Pike until the racers complete the turnaround.
  • 22nd Street from Forest to Cumberland avenues
  • Forest Avenue from 17th to 22nd streets
  • Grand Avenue between the 19th and 23rd street intersections
  • World's Fair Park Drive

Four-Person Relay, April 6

The four-person relay starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends by 2:30 p.m. Sunday, using the same route and closures as the full marathon.

Half Marathon, April 6

The half marathon will be 7:30-11 a.m. Sunday.
