Keshon Gilbert injury update: Iowa State basketball starter to miss NCAA Tournament
AMES — Iowa State men's basketball will be preparing for the NCAA Tournament without one of its key players. Shortly after learning its NCAA Tournament fate, Cyclones head coach T.J. Otzelberger announced that Keshon Gilbert will not be suiting up for Iowa State.
Gilbert, who missed four of Iowa State's last seven games with a strained groin, will be shut down for the rest of the season.
"With Keshon, we decided that he needs to focus on his rehab and getting his body back right, so he won't be available as we move forward," Otzelberger said.
No matter how far Iowa State goes, Otzelberger ruled out any possibility of a return in future rounds and games.
"He's just got to focus on him getting back healthy and getting back to being him," Otzelberger said.
Gilbert, an All-Big 12 third-team selection, averaged 13.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He shot 48.4% overall and made 29 appearances, including 28 starts.
Tamin Lipsey, who sustained a groin injury in the Big 12 Tournament second-round game against Cincinnati, is trending toward a return for Friday's opening round game against Lipscomb in Milwaukee.
"He's progressing well and each day he's getting better, so we fully anticipate he'll be ready to go for our game on Friday," Otzelberger said.
Iowa State is the 3-seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament and will open up against No. 14 Lipscomb, the Atlantic Sun champion, in Friday's NCAA Tournament opening-round slate.
