Kernel softball starts season 0-2 in Sioux Falls

Apr. 6—SIOUX FALLS — Opening a new season with a pair of games shuffled around due to weather, the Mitchell High School came in on the short end of both contests at the Sanford Sports Complex.

The Kernels fell 17-7 against Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday and were defeated by two-time defending Class AA state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln 18-2 on Saturday. Both contests went five innings.

On Friday, Delaney Linke notched two hits, one run batted in and two runs scored, while Jasmine Dirkes and Lauren Van Overschelde also scored two runs apiece. Mallory Miedema had one hit, one walk and two RBIs.

Tya Devericks and Peyten Krull each had three hits for the Cavaliers, combining for five RBIs and six runs scored in the win.

Against Lincoln, Matteah Graves recorded the lone Mitchell hit, while Macey Linke, Rylee Jennings and Reese Amick drew walks. Jennings and Amick scored the Kernels' pair of runs in the fifth inning, with Emma Hegg responsible for driving in one run.

Jennings had four strikeouts over 9 1/3 total innings pitched across both contests. Of the 35 runs Mitchell allowed, 15 were earned.

For the Patriots, Adeline Roths collected four hits and scored three runs. Kierra Lubovich had two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and struck out eight batters against three walks in five innings of work in the circle.

Mitchell (0-2) is slated to be back in action at home against Pierre on Tuesday, April 8.
